Definition

Punctuation are marks that bring clearer meaning to a sentence.

  • Period (.)  to end a sentence
  • Comma (,) to separate clauses or for the reader to take a breath
  • Exclamation point (!) to express emotion or to emphasize a point
  • Apostrophe (') to indicate possession or for contractions
  • Question mark (?) to express a question
  • Colon (:) to set up an independent clause
  • Semi colon (;) to connect two independent clauses
  • Quotation (") or (') to identify dialogue or quoted text
  • Forward slash (/) to signify an 'or' relationship between two words
  • Parenthesis ( () ) to separate information for a reader to know but not necessarily to be spoken out loud
  • Brackets ( {} or [] ) it signifies an adjustment to originally written text
