Definition

A participle is a noun, verb, or adjective formed from a verb.

Examples of a Participle as a Verb

Past Tense: Use "had," "has," "was," "were" with the verb in past tense.

She has read that book already.

I have visited Scotland many times.

It was swept yesterday.

We were suprised he came.

He was frustrated with his grade.

Present Tense: Use "am," "are," "is," "was," "were" with the verb in present tense.

It was thundering all night.

I am waiting in the lobby.

You are engaging your audience nicely.

They were singing in the car.

Examples of a Participle as a Noun: the word tends to end with -ing

She loves singing in the shower.

He wasn't studying as he should.

Eavesdropping can get you in trouble.

Examples of a Participle as an Adjective: the word occurs before the noun

She took a cycling class last week.

His dyed hair is starting to fade.

I enjoyed the glimmering rainbow in the distance.

The baked potato came out just right.
