Definition

Non-verbal communication is the use of anything but spoken language to convey meaning. This is greatly iinfluenced and determined by culture.

Nonverbal communication is influenced by the following:

Voice which can reveal attitudes and feelings.

Pitch (high or low).


Resonance (resonant or thin).


Range (spread or narrow).


Tempo (rapid or slow).


Articulation (precise or imprecise).


Disfluences (such as uh, um, etc.) 


Rhythm (smooth or jerky).


Pauses (frequency and duration).


Volume (loud or soft).


Appearance can hurt or help the speaker be accepted. The face and eyes can reveal attitudes and feelings. Posture and Movement can reveal attitudes and feelings. Personal Space and Distance: can reveal attitudes and feelings.
