Definition
A generalization is an abstract explanation of a concept.
Once you understand the generalization for a concept, then you will be able to apply it to almost any particular instance. One could say that the goal of teaching is to have students develop a generalized understanding of concepts. In cognitive science we call that developing a schema for the concept.
